A stump grinder throws wood chips and grit at high speed and has an exposed cutting wheel. Most injuries come from flying debris and from rushing the setup — both are avoidable.
Gear
- Safety glasses and a full face shield.
- Hearing protection — these machines are loud.
- Gloves, long sleeves, sturdy boots, and no loose clothing.
Setup
- Call 811 and confirm there are no buried utilities under or near the stump.
- Clear rocks and debris — thrown rocks are dangerous and wreck the teeth.
- Keep bystanders, kids, and pets well back; set up a barrier if the yard is open.
- Know where the controls and kill switch are before you engage the wheel.
While grinding
- Let the machine do the work — take shallow passes instead of forcing it.
- Keep both hands on the controls and your feet clear of the wheel.
- Stop and clear the chip pile before it builds up around the cutting head.
If the stump is large, near a structure, or on a slope, hiring a pro is often the safer call.
